Those Weapons Of Mass Destruction Have Got To Be Somewhere
Whilst the right wing fascist talk radio hosts such as Limbaugh and Hannity masturbate themselves in public over decorated Vietnam veteran John Kerry`s supposed insult to the troops in Iraq, 2812 US troops still remain dead as a result of this illegal and immoral war, tens of thousand of young men and women, who wanted to do nothing more then serve their country are maimed for life , whilst the the remaining men and women serving in Iraq are, as Martin Luther King so eloquently put it in his Beyond Vietnam speech, being "sent home from dark and bloody battlefields physically handicapped and psychologically deranged", the contempt and disgust that I feel today for people like Hannity, Limbaugh and the whole Republican party who have shamelessly exploited what was effectively a statement of truth in a vein attempt to use the deaths and sacrifice of brave men and women to rally their uneducated dwindling base of appeasers
As I watched John McCain condemn Kerry, and in doing so, denegrate and insult every man and woman who has ever put on the US soldiers uniform, every man and woman who has died defending their country and every American citizen who has ever lost a loved one in battle, I was reminded of Joseph Welch`s comment, made at another dark time in American history, "Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?"
On March 24 2004, at a White House Press Conference President Bush joked " Those Weapons Of Mass Destruction Have Got To Be Somewhere", referring of course to the non-existant WMD`s that formed the basis of this illegal and immoral war, a war that has resulted in the deaths collectively of some 600,000 Iraqis, over 3000 coalition troops and the ruination of so many mopre lives, both in America and Iraq. We immortalised that line in We Will Not Be Silenced, because for us it showed the true hypocrisy of George Bush, it showed the true feelings towards the military of the minions who laughed at that joke, it showed, more than anything, that George Bush and the Republican party do not care a flying fuck for the men and women dying and being maimed in the Desert of Death. 150,000 men and women were sent to die, ill equipped and unprotected and nearly 4 years later noone has been held accountable. When a mother of a fallen soldier stood up and asked the question, a question that more and more bereaved parents have had to ask, "Why did my child have to die", she was attacked, mercilessly and without shame by the cowards and quislings that have supported this administration for the last 6 years. When Pat Tillman`s life was cut short by friendly fire, the Bush administration shamelessly exploited his death, belittling his death in an attempt to bolster support for the Iraq war, with no regard for his mourning relatives. I am sure as history examines the Iraq war, it will expose the grotesque hypocrisy of the Bush administration, but more importantly, it will show how young men and women were sacrificed needlessly, their deaths abused and exploited, so that a corrupt regime could coerce the American public through fear and ignorance to acquiesce to their evil plans. This unholy blasphemy, and it is blasphemy because it is carried out in the name of God, may not in this world receive just punishment, but as the suicide bombers must answer to their God for the acts of evil they commit, so one day will the Bush regime and everyone who has appeased it will have to face their day of judgement. I do not believe in hell, but in this instance I hope I am wrong, and I pray that my God will see Bush, Cheney, Hannity, Limbaugh, Coulter, Rumsfeld and the whole crowd of demons that surround them pay for their sins for eternity.
In 5 days time Americans have, what will probably be their last chance, to collectively unite and save their country. In 5 days, Americans have the chance, to really support the men and women serving them and America, laying down their lives defending a noble set of ideals upon which every America was founded. In 5 days, Americans have the chance to end this nightmare that has befallen the world. In 5 days, Americans have the chance to show the world, that they will not be like the John McCains, the Rush Limbaughs, the Sean Hannitys of the world, they will stand up and support the soldiers, they will pay due respects to the men and women who have laid down their lives for their country. In 5 days, Americans can say, unequivocally, no more death in our name, no more tyranny in our name, no more lies in our name, no more oppression in our name and no more murder in our name. In 5 Days, Americans can make the words of the great orator and humanitarian Martin Luther King finally come to pass, by saying, collectively, as a people, "This way of settling differences is not just. This business of burning human beings with napalm, of filling our nation's homes with orphans and widows, of injecting poisonous drugs of hate into veins of people normally humane, of sending men home from dark and bloody battlefields physically handicapped and psychologically deranged, cannot be reconciled with wisdom, justice and love. A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death. America, the richest and most powerful nation in the world, can well lead the way in this revolution of values. There is nothing, except a tragic death wish, to prevent us from reordering our priorities, so that the pursuit of peace will take precedence over the pursuit of war. There is nothing to keep us from molding a recalcitrant status quo with bruised hands until we have fashioned it into a brotherhood".
We Will Not Be Silenced is motivated by these words spoken by Martin Luther King in 1968 - "This call for a world-wide fellowship that lifts neighborly concern beyond one's tribe, race, class and nation is in reality a call for an all-embracing and unconditional love for all men. This oft misunderstood and misinterpreted concept -- so readily dismissed by the Nietzsches of the world as a weak and cowardly force -- has now become an absolute necessity for the survival of man. When I speak of love I am not speaking of some sentimental and weak response. I am speaking of that force which all of the great religions have seen as the supreme unifying principle of life. Love is somehow the key that unlocks the door which leads to ultimate reality. This Hindu-Moslem-Christian-Jewish-Buddhist belief about ultimate reality is beautifully summed up in the first epistle of Saint John:
Let us love one another; for love is God and everyone that loveth is born of God and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. If we love one another God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. Let us hope that this spirit will become the order of the day. We can no longer afford to worship the god of hate or bow before the altar of retaliation. The oceans of history are made turbulent by the ever-rising tides of hate. History is cluttered with the wreckage of nations and individuals that pursued this self-defeating path of hate. As Arnold Toynbee says : "Love is the ultimate force that makes for the saving choice of life and good against the damning choice of death and evil. Therefore the first hope in our inventory must be the hope that love is going to have the last word.
We are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history there is such a thing as being too late. Procrastination is still the thief of time. Life often leaves us standing bare, naked and dejected with a lost opportunity. The "tide in the affairs of men" does not remain at the flood; it ebbs. We may cry out desperately for time to pause in her passage, but time is deaf to every plea and rushes on. Over the bleached bones and jumbled residue of numerous civilizations are written the pathetic words: "Too late." There is an invisible book of life that faithfully records our vigilance or our neglect. "The moving finger writes, and having writ moves on..." We still have a choice today; nonviolent coexistence or violent co-annihilation.
We must move past indecision to action. We must find new ways to speak for peace in Iraq (Vietnam) and justice throughout the developing world -- a world that borders on our doors. If we do not act we shall surely be dragged down the long dark and shameful corridors of time reserved for those who possess power without compassion, might without morality, and strength without sight. Now let us begin. Now let us rededicate ourselves to the long and bitter -- but beautiful -- struggle for a new world. This is the calling of the sons of God, and our brothers wait eagerly for our response. Shall we say the odds are too great? Shall we tell them the struggle is too hard? Will our message be that the forces of American life militate against their arrival as full men, and we send our deepest regrets? Or will there be another message, of longing, of hope, of solidarity with their yearnings, of commitment to their cause, whatever the cost? The choice is ours, and though we might prefer it otherwise we must choose in this crucial moment of human history..."
In 5 days, it is time for every good American to stand united and use the power of your voice, through the ballot box, to hold the Bush administration and the cowardly hypocrites like McCain accountable. In 5 days time, it is time for every American, be they black, white, young or old, male or female, poor or rich to reject this evil darkness that has engulfed the land of the free, to remove the insidious cancer of extreme right neo-nazi fundamentalism that has infected the home of thr brave, to stand united, to uphold the principles of the Bill of Rights and the Constution and to collectively say - We Will Not Be Silenced any longer.
