Ecolonomics

» February 26, 2005, 12:50 pm
I was approached by the Institute of Ecolonomics to provide some help to get their message out to the populus

As we are fast approaching a critical point in our evolution in respects to how we live and how we treat the world around us, this idealogy is not only a symbiosis between living well and living an ecologically aware lifestyle, it is also a development of the "nature ideals" that have been handed down to us from many civilisations in the past, such as the Native American Indians and the Aborigines. As such, I think that as we agonise daily over issues such as global warming, peak oil etc, this provides a lot of the answers I know I have been looking for, and whilst I tend not to endorse "causes" unless they have a positive social impact, this definately falls within that criteria.

An explantion of the philosophy of Ecolonomics.

Ecolonomics in its simplest and most basic form is Prosperity without Pollution
Dennis Weaver, based on his conviction that a truly sustainable future requires a healthy environment and a prosperous economy, founded the Institute of Ecolonomics in 1993. The mission of the Institute of Ecolonomics is to demonstrate that creating a symbiotic relationship between a strong economy and a healthy ecology is the only formula for a sustainable future.

Ecolonomics is a word expressing the understanding that our ecology and economy are two sides of the same coin. Ecolonomics is a movement away from behavior that is ecologically and economically destructive towards activities that protect our environment and nurture our economy. Ecolonomics is an academic discipline aimed at harnessing the symbiotic power inherent to the ecology—economics relationship. Ecolonomics is a vision that sees business, government, and education working together to achieve a prosperous, sustainable future. Ecolonomics is a commitment to our future made individually and collectively, here and now.

A further delineation of this theory would be to:

1) Develop non-polluting technologies that turn into viable ecolonomic/sustainable businesses
2) Increase the population base whose daily practices center around ecolonomic/sustainable theories
3) Identify, research, demonstrate and promote clean and inexhaustible energy sources
4) Assist inventors of ecolonomic/sustainable technologies in obtaining legal and other support
5) Implement ecolonomic/sustainability curriculum nationally and internationally
6) Conduct ecolonomic/sustainability courses and workshops via the Internet
7) Publish literature for young people underscoring the interdependence of our ecology and economy
8) Stage dynamic media events demonstrating ecolonomic/sustainability technologies

IOE has worked with a number of organizations, including Delta-Montrose Electric Association (DMEA), Environment Now, EcoSense Solutions, Intergalactic Hydrogen, Monarch Youth Homes, Netozoic, and Spirit Money. The “Drive to Survive” and “Clean Air Festival” are just a couple of the main events that IOE has organized or supported. This organization has made many steps in creating a well-educated and more sustainable population.

The IOE is also now working to promote the ideas of ecolonomics on an international scale through our partnership with the U. S. Partnership for the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD). The U.S. Partnership is a volunteer partnership of organizations in the United States dedicated to the DESD and its goals the U.S. The partnership's member organizations come from every sector - higher education, K-12, business, non-profits, government, faith communities, and more.

The United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development officially began January 1st, 2005. The Institute of Ecolonomics became and official partner through the U.S. Partnership in mid-January, 2005. The IOE looks forward to the wonderful work that will be done to spread ideas that mirror those of the ideas of Ecolonomics. The lead agency for the Decade is the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Some of the aspects of the decade include:

1) The promotion and improvement of high quality, relevant basic education;
2) The reorienting of existing education policies and programs to address the social, environmental and economic knowledge, skills and values inherent to sustainability in a holistic and interdisciplinary manner;
3) The development of public understanding and awareness of the principles of sustainable development;
4) The development of specialized training programs to ensure that all sectors of society have the skills necessary to perform their work in a sustainable manner

This is a worthy thing to look into in my humble opinion, the planet is crying out for change, an upcoming conference is planned for April, for more info please visit Institute of Ecolonomics
